Job Description

Department Overview

The OHSU Multispecialty Procedure Unit consists of the Cardiac Cath and Electrophysiology Lab, Endoscopy Unit and the Interventional Radiology Unit. These procedural care units, and the integrated pre/post unit deliver warm, caring and efficient service in all instances to patients, families, staff and community. The patient’s experience with the program spans from their initial scheduling experience to the procedure and subsequent post-op procedure care.  The patients’ needs and conditions range from care coordination for complex procedures that are integrated into a clinical care plan, to routine health maintenance procedures.

 

Patients in Interventional Radiology are cared for by a multidisciplinary team including Registered Nurses, Interventional Radiology Technologists, and Interventionalists. The department is open Monday through Friday from 07:30 to 16:00 for routine and emergent cases and an on-call team is available 7 days a week for all cases after routine hours of operation.

Function/Duties of Position

The OHSU Clinical registered nurse (RN) provides compassionate, evidence-based, and efficient care to individuals, families, communities and patient populations. The Clinical RN's care delivery is consistent with the Oregon Nurse Practice Act, the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice, and the ANA Code of Ethics. Working Conditions

  • Ability to lift, bend, stoop, reach, carry, push, pull and walk throughout the work period. Able to lift 35 lbs independently.  Complies with the safe patient mobilization policy when lifting or positioning dependent patients, including using mechanical lifts and coordinating the assistance of other personnel.   
  • Must be able to use all senses: seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, and speaking. Reasonable accommodations include  corrective lenses and/or hearing aids
  • The work environment carries risk of exposure to human tissue/fluids and radiation
  • Must be able to deal with competing needs and priorities of internal and external customers, including making correct judgments ensuring safe conditions for patients, families, and other personnel
  • Use of all hospital approved clinical equipment.   Significant use of computers, copiers, multi-line phones, and fax
  • Ability to stand up to 6 hours without sitting
  • Ability to wear up to 20 lbs of leaded aprons for entire shift.
  • Fast paced admit/recovery environment, with often competing priorities and quick turn-over of patients
  • Must have the ability to change work location based upon procedure volumes and staffing needs

Department Specific Working Conditions:

  • Requires the ability to ride the Arial tram throughout the day
  • Requires the ability to tolerate moving throughout entire shift
  • Requires the flexibility to stay focused and have your assignment changed several times throughout your shift
  • Requires weekend and after hours call and ability to report to work within 30 min of being called – not required for Resource RN

Required Qualifications

The qualifications for the position are the minimum requirements to be eligible for an interview.  The level of required experience and expertise for each posted position is influenced by the current amount of knowledge and skills of the other nurses in the unit/departments. 

 

Minimum requirements for all RNs:

  • Current, unencumbered Oregon RN license.
  • Current BLS required at time of hire
  • Current ACLS required at time of hire
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing for external hires; BSN preferred for internal candidates 
  • 1-2 years nursing experience in the inpatient setting with a complex medical or surgical focus or in ambulatory or community based setting working with chronically ill or medically complex patients
  • Communication skills including fluency in oral and written English.
  • Basic computer skills including the ability to send/receive email, navigate information technology associated with the position, and use Electronic Health Record information and tools
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation

Department Specific Requirements (competencies, equipment, certifications, etc.):

  • Minimum 2 year Critical Care, PACU, ED, Procedural experience
  • Confidence to work next to and communicate directly with physicians throughout the shift
  • Excellent communication skills including active listening, the ability to engage with a diverse set of patient populations, and success with conflict management
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team while being collaborative in resolving problems
  • Ability to successfully navigate complex patient care coordination needs independently
  • Serve as a role model in supporting and promoting OHSU’s vision and mission
  • Efficient time management to effectively move patients through the system

Preferred Qualifications

Department Specific Preferences (competencies, certifications, etc.):

  • Experience with procedural care nursing
  • Experience with caring for patients undergoing procedures and associated complications
  • Knowledge/experience with radiation safety, fluoroscopy
  • Knowledge/experience related to IR procedures including GIB, stroke, and trauma
  • Experience as a Charge RN in a related setting (ICU, PACU, ED)
  • Experience as a member of a Shared Governance council or committee
  • Able to quickly and accurately assess patients’ conditions
  • Able to efficiently handle emergencies and remain calm in stressful situations
  • Maintain a professional demeanor at all times
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • High emotional intelligence and able to effectively direct self
  • Attention to detail and time management skills
  • Comfort managing and prioritizing competing demands
  • Skillful at working with different personalities
  • Effective at working within a multi-disciplinary team
