HJF is seeking a Nurse Case Manager (NCM) to support the John P. Murtha Cancer Center (MCC) located at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) in Bethesda, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to MCC. U.S Citizenship is required. Must have an active Maryland State nursing license (not a compact nursing license).

The incumbent will work as a Nurse Case Manager for MCC cancer patients in the following areas: Orthopedic Oncology, Surgical Oncology, and Thoracic Oncology.  The NCM may also be eligible to navigate all MCC cancer patients except the patients in Breast, Prostate and Gynecologic areas.  

The John P. Murtha Cancer Center at Walter Reed Bethesda is a modern, patient-centric, tri-service military healthcare facility. Its comprehensive core of military and civilian oncologists and other cancer-trained clinicians and researchers provide multidisciplinary cancer-care delivery and patient-family support services. Our Cancer Center, the only DoD Cancer Center of Excellence within the Military Health System, offers its patients access to cutting-edge cancer diagnostic and treatment technologies.

The Nurse Case Manager (NCM) serves as a consistent care coordinator to eligible beneficiaries at the Murtha Cancer Center WRNMMC, ensuring timely access and seamless coordination of services throughout the continuum of cancer care. The NCM will meet with patients and families to provide emotional support and guidance following the diagnosis of cancer through end stage disease if necessary. The NCM will provide medical information; education; and share knowledge regarding internal and external support services and resources. The NCM will be responsible for facilitating: rapid scheduling, coordination follow-up care, and tracking patients to ensure completion of recommended treatment plan. The NCM will identify and assist patients and families in eliminating potential barriers to care by identifying and referring to appropriate resources. The NCM will be an integral part of and professional member of the Interdisciplinary team promoting optimal patient care.

Responsibilities:

  1. Extract demographic, clinical, and laboratory data from DoD electronic and paper clinical data systems.   
  2. Assist in development, testing, and revision of Project/Investigation Forms (case report forms, data extraction tools, etc.).
  3. Assist with generation of missing data elements summary.         
  4. Communicate with data sources to request and obtain missing data elements.   
  5. Receive, process, file, and incorporate into investigation database missing elements.
  6. Perform data entry.
  7. May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of procedures and techniques necessary for performing research tasks; ability to learn and become proficient in data acquisition and clinical responsibilities related to research protocols; excellent interpersonal skills. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to work as part of a team. Meticulous attention to detail. Research and or Public Health experience highly desirable. Familiarity with VA/DoD Healthcare and health information systems.

Minimum Education: Bachelors degree in Nursing required.

Minimum Experience/ Training Requirements: Minimum of 3-5 years of work experience required. Must have at least 1 year in clinical research care and must have Oncology experience. 

Required Licenses, Certification or Registration: Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of Maryland. Certified in basic cardiac life support preferred. 

Work Arrangement: 100% on-site.

Background/Security:  U.S. citizenship required; eligible to obtain and maintain a Tier III Investigation/ Secret Clearance and Common Access Card (CAC).
