Position Summary:
The Clinical Expeditor has the primary responsibility of assigning bed placement for patients requiring admission to acute care and critical care units to all Multi Care Health System IBUs. This will include admissions from Emergency Departments, direct admits, inter-facility, and inter-unit transfers. Surgical patients (in the case of add on procedures and/or changes to admission) as well as pediatrics, overflow units, observation units, short stay units, and admissions from outside facilities. Chart review and /or calls to clarify bed criteria will be performed to assure appropriate bed placement. The Clinical Expeditor collaborates with the House Supervisors, Charge RNs, Physicians, EVS, Case Management, the Resource Management Center, and other facilities to define, reduce and eliminate barriers within the system which may impede patient flow.
Principal Accountabilities
- Answers and responds to inbound calls from internal and external facilities/MDs for patient transfers, consults, telehealth, and other medically relevant situations for all patient populations including adults and pediatrics.
- Works collaboratively with Providers and others to facilitate patient placement.
- Documents all information necessary for appropriate bed assignment.
- Collaborate the patient’s placement appropriately based on the patient’s immediate needs or specialty needs.
- Facilitates patient throughput and serves as appoint of contact to communicate with Physicians and Nurses throughout the system regarding emergency, urgent, elective and direct admissions and availability to support a timely patient placement.
- Functions as a key member for the virtual health platform.
- Ensures customer satisfaction by providing a smooth functioning of the bed management process in order to reduce wait times and avoid unnecessary movement of patients.
- Evaluates all throughput and bed resource utilization for potential implementation of cost-effective measures.
- Collaborates with Clinical Leaders and Management to define, reduce, and eliminate barriers within the system which may negatively impact patient throughput and efficient delivery of care.
- Cross-train to other Mission Coordination positions to help with coverage and flow.
- Utilizes the MCO for any cases where there is a question about patient care or placement.
- Performs an appropriate handoff with the both the previous and oncoming shifts.
- Fully complies with and promotes MHS values, standards, and competencies at all times.
Minimum Requirements:
Five years recent clinical experience in a tertiary acute care setting required
Previous experience and demonstrated skills in a leadership or a supervisory role required
Previous House Supervisor experience preferred
Three years management experience preferred
Education/Licenses/Certifications:
Bachelor's degree in Nursing, or obtained within three years from the initial date of hire
Advanced Degree in Nursing (MSN, PhD, DNP, ARNP) preferred
Current license as a Registered Nurse in the State of Washington
ACLS certified or must become certified within 6 months of employment
Health Care Provider CPR certification required
